Scientific Adventures for Girls is beyond excited to launch into the 2026-27 school year which is shaping up to be our biggest and best yet!
Welcome to our newest Scientific Adventures for Girls students and welcome back to those ready for another adventurous year!
At the end of September, over 1,000 girls will take the journey from the ground beneath their feet to the farthest reaches of the solar system by exploring the forces that shape our planet to the science that takes us beyond it for 10 weeks of Earth Shakers & Star Gazers Earth & Space Science lessons. Our 7 teachers, 7 teaching assistants, and 26 near peers are prepared for takeoff! We'll see you soon! |

Meet Zuri!
This month, we're shining a light on Zuri, a bright and curious 4th grader in our afterschool STEM program. Zuri joined us last year and loved it so much that she couldn't wait to come back this year!

Science doesn’t have to stay in the classroom! Simple experiments at home can turn everyday materials into opportunities to explore, ask questions, and discover how things work. Here are a few easy, hands-on activities you can try together using materials you may already have at home. |

Free After-School STEM at Melrose Library
Scientific Adventures for Girls is offering free weekly STEM activities for children ages 5–12 at Melrose Branch Library. Students can take part in hands-on activities exploring topics such as Earth & Space Science, Climate Solutions, Color Science, and more.
When: Mondays, starting September 21
Time: 3:30 - 5:00 PM

Science in the Park — FREE

Science in the Park is a free, family-friendly community event celebrating science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM). Families can explore hands-on activities, interactive exhibits, demonstrations, and live animals while learning about science in a fun and engaging environment. |
Dr. Mae C. Jemison
Mae Jemison is a physician, engineer, educator, and former NASA astronaut. In 1992, she became the first African American woman to travel to space, serving as a science mission specialist aboard Space Shuttle Endeavour.
In her own words, Dr. Jemison recalls an early moment that reflects her curiosity and determination:
“In kindergarten my teacher asked me—actually asked the whole class—now what do you want to be when you grow up? And I said, ‘I want to be a scientist.’ And she looked at me and she said, ‘Don’t you mean a nurse?’ ... But I really just put my hands on my hips, and I said, ‘No, I mean a scientist.’”
She later reflected on what drew her to science:
“I think now as an adult looking back, it was the creativity that drew me to it. The possibilities. Understanding what was going on in the world around me.”
